Gower Peninsula

Click here for details of our walks in the area.

Declared an area of outstanding natural beauty over 40 years ago, this 19 mile long peninsula of undulating limestone points down into the Bristol channel to the west of Swansea. The Gower itself starts from the small victorian seaside resort of Mumbles and encompases a variety of mixed and varied vegetation; with wide open flat marches and heathland surrounded by magnificant beaches from Langland round to Llangennith. A great recreational area for a variety of sporting activities on our doorstep!

Mumbles

Mumbles is one of the main focal points in the area. This victorian seaside resort includes a restored pier and promenade, icecream parlours and arcades. Also home of the 'Mumbles Mile' - a notorious student pub crawl!

On travelling clockwise round the Gower from Mumbles Head, the entire south coast is surrounded by limestone crags with dipping and tucking cliffs, and rocky inlets. These encase Three Cliffs Bay, along with beaches at Oxwich, Horton and Port Eynon before reaching Rhossili and Worms Head.

Rhossili

Rhossili lies where the western end of the southern rocky coastal line meets the beach streatching the entire length of the west coast. It is the furthest point out from Swansea and a firm favourite with tourists during the summer months. During low tides you can walk across to Worm's Head, an isolated bundle of rocks accessible for only five hours a day. The area offers a variety of stunning views, sometimes as far afield as Exmoor and Pembrokeshire on a clear day. A great starting or finishing point for a days walk!

Stretching along the backbone of the Gower is a magnificant long beach, which runs alongside Rhossili Down up to the moors and dunes of Llangennith and Llanmadoc. While the northern coast with its marches and mud flats stands beside the Loughor estuary overlooking the town of Llanelli.

Highlight

Rhossili to Swansea Sponsored Walk - Grade C1

The traditional walk the length of the Gower Peninsula is 22 miles from Rhossili to Mumbles or 26 miles to Swansea. This walk is all along the beautiful south coast of the Gower. We start near Worm's Head at Rhossili passing Port Eynon, Oxwich Bay and Three Cliffs Bay before arriving in Mumbles. After a quick icecream (or two :D) we continue around the bay to Swansea. While this walk is the longest we do in the year, the relatively flat coastline and beautiful scenery make this a walk not to be missed. We will also encourage sponsorship for this walk in aid of charity. Can you walk a marathon? Try this year!
